Buckeye Broadband to expand fiber in Huron, Sandusky

HURON and SANDUSKY – Buckeye Broadband customers in Huron and Sandusky will soon be able to receive ten times faster internet than they are receiving now.

The Toledo-based company announced that they will be expanding their fiber-optic lines to Huron and Sandusky. The company says construction has already begun on the 270-mile fiber build in Huron and Sandusky and work will be completed by the end of 2023.

“The investment in this fiber upgrade is a commitment to our community to provide cutting-edge technology, which will provide some of the fastest speeds available in the country,” said Buckeye Broadband President and General Manager Geoff Shook.

Buckeye says the new fiber lines will give customers access to internet speeds up to ten gigabits. Currently, the company offers up to one-gigabit internet. A gigabit is a measure of storage capacity and data transfer equal to 1 billion bits.

The company has not released pricing information.

The announcement comes while two other internet companies have expanded fiber-optic lines in Huron and Sandusky. Frontier Communications, which has provided internet and landline service to Huron since 2010, is upgrading its lines to fiber-optic and is now providing a majority of Huron with speeds up to two gigabits. Omni Fiber, a startup company based out of Cincinnati, is constructing fiber-optic lines to Bellevue, Huron, and Sandusky and is also now providing much of Erie County with speeds up to two gigabits.

Buckeye Broadband is currently the largest internet and cable television provider in Huron and Sandusky.
