Man arrested at McCormick Middle School

HURON – A 39-year-old man was arrested at McCormick Middle School during a basketball game.

According to a report from the Erie County Sheriff’s Office, two Huron police officers and an Erie County deputy responded to the middle school on the evening of Thursday, February 1 after receiving a tip regarding Joseph Story, of Berlin Heights, who had an active warrant for a theft charge through Erie County Municipal Court.

When police arrived, according to the report, he gave them a fake name, but once in the lobby, confirmed his identity and soon began handing items from his pockets to his wife.

The report states that one of those items was a small clear bag containing an unknown white substance. The bag allegedly fell to the ground with children nearby. Police picked the bag up, and Story claimed it must have been “someone else’s,” the report states.

A pen tube containing a large amount of brown residue and burn marks was allegedly found in Story’s pockets.

According to the report, while at the Erie County Jail, Story attempted to fight corrections officers and began spitting on them, which caused him to be placed in a restraint chair.
