Huron track closed for resurfacing

HURON – Starting Monday, April 24, the Huron High School track will be closed to replace the existing track and improve water drainage around it.

According to the contract approved by the Huron Board of Education in February, the cost for the renovations will not exceed $616,501, and funding will come from the federal COVID-19 ESSER funds the district received. Vasco Sports, of Massillon, is the contractor for the project.

The track is expected to be closed until July 30.

Saturday’s 42nd Artie Miller Invite was the final meet held on the old track.

During the meet, the girls 4×800 team of junior Jadyn Towns, junior Lucy Watson, sophomore Sam Lesnak, and senior Kennedy Schlessman broke the 20-year-old school record by nearly eight seconds. Members of the previous record-holding relay team witnessed the recording breaking after being honored earlier at the meet. The team is currently ranked first in Ohio Division II, second in the state, and thirty-seventh in the country.

Senior Conner Schaeffer broke the 50-year-old 200 meter dash record previously held by Bill Scott from 1972 and Mark Barker from 1974. The previous record was 22.00, and Schaeffer finished with a time of 21.98.

The Tigers’ boys 4×100 team also broke their previous school record, along with the stadium and meet record, with a time of 42.58; and the boys 4×200 team broke the stadium and meet record with a time of 1:29.78.

Huron girls team ended up finishing first overall at the meet, and the boys finished runner-up to Wauseon.
