Condolences continue to family and friends of Max Soviak

BERLIN HEIGHTS – People are continuing to offer condolences to the family and friends of Max Soviak. Soviak, a Berlin Heights native and a 2017 graduate of Edison High School, is among the 13 military personnel killed in the suicide bombing at the Kabul airport in Afghanistan Thursday.

Earlier Thursday, the Navy and Edison Local Schools superintendent Thomas Roth released statements regarding Soviak’s death.

Since then, more have released statements remembering Soviak and offering support his family and friends.

EHOVE Career Center, where Soviak attended for his junior and senior year of high school, wrote on Facebook, “Anytime we lose a student, we lose a part of our school family and the loss is deeply felt. Our thoughts are with Max’s family and friends at this time. Along with all federal buildings, we will be flying our flag at half-staff to honor Max and the other victims.”

The Edison Chargers wrestling team tweeted, “The Edison Wrestling Program is deeply saddened by the loss of one of their own. We would like to extend our sympathy to the family of Navy Corpsman Max Soviak. Max was a great teammate and a pleasure to be around. You will be missed Max!!”

Governor Mike DeWine released a statement saying, “Fran & I are deeply saddened over reports that one of Ohio’s brave service members was killed in yesterday’s terrorist attack. Navy Corpsman Max Soviak chose to dedicate his life to helping others, and he will never be forgotten. We offer our heartfelt condolences to his family.”

State Representative D.J. Swearingen released a statement saying, “The 89th House District has lost a hero, Navy Corpsman Max Soviak from Berlin Heights, who was killed in action serving his country in Afghanistan. We will be forever grateful for Max and his service to our country. Please pray for his family and loved ones.”

State Senator Theresa Gavarone released a statement saying, “Our hearts ache for the family of fallen hero, Max Soviak. A brave young Ohioan, who made the ultimate sacrifice and gave his life to protect others and our country. We honor his service, and our prayers go out to his family and loved ones.”

Representative Jim Jordan released a statement saying, “Our hearts and prayers are with Corpsman Soviak’s family. This young man served his country, and Ohio’s Fourth District, bravely and honorably. Our country will never be able to repay his sacrifice, but we will always remember it. God bless our troops.”

Senator Sherrod Brown released a statement saying, “Max Soviak, a Navy Fleet Marine Force Hospital Corpsman from Berlin Heights, died a hero serving his country and working to save the lives of those fleeing imminent danger. My thoughts are with his family, who received the hardest news any parent can hear. May the lives he worked to save be a comfort to all who knew and loved him. His selflessness and heroism will be his legacy.”

Senator Rob Portman released a statement saying, “Jane and I are heartbroken by the death of Max Soviak, a Navy Fleet Marine Force Hospital Corpsman from Berlin Heights, who lost his life in the service of his country. He was a hero who died serving with his Marine brothers helping to save fellow countrymen and our Afghan allies. We mourn his loss and are praying for his family and friends.”
