Tips to Have a Safe Halloween This Year

The Ohio State Highway Patrol and Ohio Department of Health have released ways to celebrate Halloween safely.

Because of COVID-19, Ohio Department of Health is recommending that people avoid hayrides, haunted houses, trunk-or-treating events, traditional trick-or-treating, in-person Halloween festivities. People are asked to instead go to drive through trick-or-treat, drive in costume or car-decorating contests, have pumpkin carving contests with members of your household or neighborhood, hold online events, have a Halloween scavenger hunt, or have a Halloween movie night with members of your household or neighborhood. People who are giving out candy for trick-or-treating, they are asked to consider ways to make it safer. People are also asked to social distance and wear masks if they are with members not from their household.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol is recommending that people who are trick-or-treating walk on sidewalks whenever possible, if there are no sidewalks, walk facing traffic as far away from the edge of the roadway, to not get distracted by electronic devices, wear bright clothing, carry flashlights, follow road signs and signals, never assume a driver can see you. Motorists are required to yield to pedestrians in a marked crosswalk and in unmarked crosswalks at intersections. Motorists are also recommended to use bright headlights when legally able to illuminate the roadway and possibly spot a pedestrian walking near the roadway and slow down and drive cautiously in residential areas.

The citywide trick-or-treating time in Huron is 5PM-7PM. Neighborhood times may vary.
