Erie County residents 80 and older may be able to receive the COVID-19 vaccine soon

The Erie County Health Department is expecting to start vaccinating Erie County residents that are 80 years and older starting on the week of January 18. This is in accordance with Ohio’s 1B COVID-19 Vaccination Plan.

Details on how to register for the vaccine will be released Thursday. When it is released, we will post the info on how to register on Huron Insider.

The Erie County Health Department will end Phase 1A Vaccinations this week. As of Monday, 2,701 Erie County residents, or 3.64%, have received the COVID-19 vaccine. That makes Erie County have the second highest vaccination rate in Ohio.

Last week, Erie County Health Commissioner Peter Schade told WTOL that the Erie County Health Department violated the State’s Phase 1A Vaccination Plan. Phase 1A says that vaccines should only be given to healthcare workers and personnel who are involved in the care of COVID-19 patients, EMS responders, and vulnerable individuals who live together in close proximity and those who care for them. Shade said that about 200 police officers and deputies have received the vaccine. Shade’s reasoning for violating the plan was that local health care workers didn’t register for the vaccine.
