UPDATED: Bicyclist killed in crash

UPDATE 2PM JULY 7: The bicyclist is the crash, Valerie French, 68, of Wakeman, died from her injuries on Thursday morning.

The crash remains under investigation by the Highway Patrol.

ORIGINAL POST: WAKEMAN – A bicyclist and car driver were both hospitalized Wednesday morning after their vehicles collided on State Route 303, east of Butler Road.

According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred when Richard Dewitt, 27, of South Amherst, was driving a white 2010 GMC van westbound on SR 303, and Valerie French, 68, of Wakeman, was riding a bicycle westbound on SR 303. The Patrol says Dewitt did not notice French and struck her bicycle.

Dewitt was transported from the scene by Central Lorain County EMS to Fisher Titus Medical Center with possible injuries. He was wearing a safety belt at the time of the crash.

French was transported to Fisher Titus Medical Center with serious injuries and later flown from Fisher Titus Medical Center to Cleveland MetroHealth. She was not wearing any protective equipment.
