Accused intoxicated driver allegedly found with firearm, mushrooms

SANDUSKY – A 47-year-old Tennessee man was arrested and charged with a felony Saturday, after he allegedly drove intoxicated with a firearm in his vehicle.

According to a report from the Sandusky Police Department, the incident started when police received a call about a possible OVI involving a truck on Water Street. Officers, according to the report, located the truck on Wayne Street and pulled it over on West Washington Street after observing several errors, including one time when all four of the trucks tires went into the wrong lane.

The report states that when police spoke to the driver, Michael Keyes, his speech was slurred and he was very slow with completing actions. Police asked him if he would consent to Field Sobriety Tests, which he said no, the report states. Keyes was then placed under arrest for OVI. The report states when police arrested Keyes, he asked questions about police searching his vehicle, along with stating that he was actually not under arrest.

When police searched his vehicle, according to a report they first found a magazine that contained 13 rounds in the center console. Police asked Keyes where a firearm was located in the vehicle, which he responded to by saying that there was a firearm in the vehicle, but he would not say where it was located, the report states. Police eventually found a firearm in a book bag on the floor of the front passenger seat, the report states. The firearm, according to the report, had a magazine with 13 rounds inserted into it; however, there were no rounds in the chamber.

The report states that police also found three mushrooms in the rear passenger door. The mushrooms were sent for testing as they were suspected to be psychedelic mushrooms, the report states.

Keyes was charged with OVI (M1), improper handling a firearm in a motor vehicle, (F5), and improper turn (MM).
