Longtime Vermilion officer passes away

VERMILION – Fred Barch, who served with the Vermilion Police Department for over 25 years, passed away Friday, his former department announced Monday.

Barch started his career as a part time officer on January 20, 1973 and became full time a year later in July 1974. He was promoted to Sergeant in March 1980 and Lieutenant in August of 1989. He continued his role until his retirement on June 25, 1999. Barch then briefly returned as a part time officer in 2000.

During his time with the Vermilion Police Department, Barch contributed to Safety Town, the Police Explorer program, and the Vermilion Police Rescue Squad. He also attended the FBl’s National Academy in Quantico, Virginia in 1993.
