Both Huron basketball coaches named Coach of the Year; multiple players named to all-district team

UNIONTOWN – The 2021-2022 season has been a successful season for both the boys and girls Huron basketball teams. Now, both the coaches and players are receiving recognition from the Ohio High School Basketball Coaches Association.

Boys coach Bobby James and girls coach Darius Schaeffer were named Division 2 District 6 Coaches of the Year.

This season was Schaeffer’s first as the girls varsity coach. He previously was the boys JV coach. This year, the girls finished the regular season with a 14-5 record; by comparison, last season, the girls finished the regular season with a 4-11 record. Playoffs will begin for the Huron girls on Saturday, February 19. They will play Bucyrus in the first round.

For James’ boys team, this season has brought a lot of success with a 17-2 record. The boys still have one more game to go until playoffs. That game will be held on Friday, February 18 and will be against Willard.

Several Huron players were also named to the Division 2 District 6 all-district team. On the girls team, senior Ava Winnestaffer was named to first team, junior Mia Hurst was named to second team, and junior Jessica Holsapple was named an honorable mention. On the boys team, junior Dylan Hohler was named to first team, senior Tait Fischer was named to second team, and senior Joey Schade was named an honorable mention. Hohler was also named District 6 Player of the Year.
