Woman dies, two teens hospitalized following crash on US 6

VERMILION – A woman is dead and two teens have been hospitalized following a crash Friday morning on US 6 near Cavalry Avenue in Vermilion Township.

According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred when a 2012 Chrysler Town and County minivan, driven by Laurel Cooley, of Vermilion, was driving westbound and struck a trailer from a 2020 Volvo semi, driven by Theodore Riley, of Norwalk, that was attempting to back northbound into a private drive.

Cooley sustained fatal injuries and was transported from the scene by Foster Funeral Home. She was wearing her seat belt at the time of the crash.

There were also two passengers in Cooley’s vehicle. They were a 15-year-old male juvenile from Vermilion, OH, who was the front passenger, and Kegan Reyes, 18, of Huron, who was the rear passenger. Both sustained minor injuries and were transported to Mercy Hospital by the Huron Fire Department. Both were also wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash.

Riley was wearing his seatbelt and was not injured in the crash.

The crash remains under investigation; however, alcohol and drugs are not suspected factors in the crash.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol was assisted at the scene by the Erie County Sheriff’s Office, Huron Fire and EMS, Interstate Towing, and ODOT.
