Man who allegedly stuck and killed 13-year-old riding bike arrested

SHELBY – The man who allegedly hit and killed 13-year-old riding bike with his pickup truck is now in jail.

Bud Thornsberry, 38, of Shiloh, is accused of striking a bicycle while driving north on Bowman Road in Cass Township Sunday morning and then fleeing the scene. As a result of crash, the bicyclist, Luke Newswanger, 13, of Shelby, died.

Following reports of the crash, which included a description of the pickup truck that was believed to have caused the crash, the Ohio State Highway Patrol received numerous tips from the public regarding sightings of possible vehicles fitting the description of
the pickup. Troopers followed up on many of the leads.

Untimely, Thornsberry approached troopers while they were out looking for him. Thornsberry has been charged with aggravated vehicular assault, tampering with evidence and failure to stop after an accident causing death. All three charges are felonies. He was
incarcerated at the Richland County Jail and arraigned Monday morning in Shelby Municipal Court.
