Paul Schippel, Sr.

Paul Charles “Red” Schippel, Sr. 87, of Sandusky, passed away peacefully on November 13, 2021, surrounded by his loving family.
Paul was born on November 22, 1933, to the late Dewey and Marie (Carney) Schippel.

Right out of school, he drove truck and worked construction for many years. He started out working for the John C. Opfer Company, followed by Herzog Construction, Borchardt Trucking, and Erie Blacktop in 1997. After retiring from Erie Blacktop, Paul became the head groundskeeper for Zierolf Football field, home of the Saint Mary’s Central Catholic Panthers, in Sandusky for well over 20 years. The field was his pride and joy; he was not afraid to admit it. He retired for the final time in 2018. He met many people throughout his life and made many friends. He could not go anywhere without finding someone he knew along the way. Not one person that he met had anything bad to say about him.

Paul is survived by his children, Susan (Dan) Touchstone, of Florida, Paul (Karla) Schippel Jr., of Florida, Cynthia Tackett, of Sandusky, and Brenda (John) Linville, of Sandusky; 16 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren; twin sister Pauline Durdel and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Paul was preceded in death by his loving wife Mary, to whom he was married for 40 years, until her passing in 2003. He is also preceded in death by his brothers Dewey and Robert Schippel; and son in law, Troy Tackett.

Paul enjoyed many things in life. His greatest joy was being “Boppa” or “Gramp” to his many grandchildren. He was also known for his love of helping others. He’d give the shirt off his back to anyone in need.

Friends may call on Wednesday, November 17, 2021, from 4:00pm to 7:00pm at Groff Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1607 E Perkins Ave, Sandusky.
