Interim superintendent says district violated health guidelines by allowing COVID-19 exposed students to return with antibody test

HURON – In an email to parents and guardians of Huron City Schools students, Interim Superintendent John Ruf said that he allowed students who had been exposed to COVID-19 to return to school with a COVID-19 antibody test. Ruf says that this violated guidelines from the CDC and Erie County Health Department. Ruf apologized for the “misunderstanding”, and said that “Huron City Schools will no longer accept Covid antibody test to shorten or prevent student quarantine.”

According to the FDA, “Antibody tests can play an important role in identifying individuals who may have been exposed to the SARS-CoV-2 virus and may have developed an adaptive immune response. However, antibody tests should not be used at this time to determine immunity or protection against COVID-19 at any time, and especially after a person has received a COVID-19 vaccination”
