AG Yost proposes giving $1,000 to Ohio law enforcement officers that served during the pandemic

COLUMBUS – Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost would like to give $1,000 to each Ohio law enforcement officer who served during the pandemic.

In a letter to Governor Mike DeWine, President of the Ohio Senate Matt Huffman, and Speaker of the Ohio House Bob Cupp, Yost proposed that the state use federal money to offer at least $1,000 in premium pay to all eligible law enforcement officers.

The letter states, “COVID-19 affected every Ohioan in every profession, but it’s impact on law enforcement was particularly debilitating. Unable to work from home or avoid contact with each other, officers were required for months to continue to perform the essential functions of their job without the benefit of a home officer or six feet of distance.”

The letter also references a similar proposal in Florida. WESH reports that Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced a plan to give all Florida police officers, firefighters, and paramedics $1,000 bonuses.
