Police Blotter for the week of March 28

HURON – Below is a summary of Huron Police reports from between March 28, 2021 to April 3, 2021.

On March 28 at 7:39AM, police arrived at a Linden Drive house to locate a vehicle that was involved in a hit-skip in Sandusky. Police were able to locate the vehicle in the front of the house and then contacted Sandusky Police.

On March 29 at 1:07PM, the Erie County Jail said they had a man in custody who had a warrant issued from the Huron Municipal Court. The warrant was for violation of a protection order (F5). It had no bond.

On March 29 at 4:18PM, police received a fax of a Rule 4 Waiver. The fax notified them that a man was ready to be transported from the Lorain County Jail to the Erie County Jail. The man had warrant issued for his arrest by Huron Municipal Court.

On March 29 at 4:30PM, police arrived at a Kiwanis Avenue house for a report of vandalism. Police spoke to a woman who said that, a little over a week ago, her neighbor took out several of her plants near the property line. Police then went to the property line and observed that vegetation had been taken out. The woman said she would like her neighbor to pay for new plants. Police then attempted to speak with the neighbor; however, she was out of town.

On March 29 at 5:57PM, police arrived at a Silvern Avenue house for a report of a man who wouldn’t leave. Police spoke with a man and the woman who made the complaint. The woman said that the homeowner asked her to keep an eye on the home. She said that the man was leaning over half wall build around a portion of the house. She told him that he needed to leave. He refused. The man said that he was keeping an eye on a nearby house and he was just checking in on this house. He apologized and said he would no longer check in on this house.

On March 29 at 7:32PM, police and the Huron Rescue Squad arrived at a Ridgeview Drive condo for a report of an intoxicated female that had fallen and had a possible head injury. The woman was later transported to Firelands Regional Medical Center.

On March 30 at 2:08PM, police arrived at a Swanson Street for a welfare check. The Zoning Department, who put in the report, said that they were concerned about the condition of the property with children around. When police began approaching the home, they noticed a broken-out front window and a partially cracked and broken side window. Police then spoke first with the owner of the home. When he was told why police were there, he became defensive of his home and its occupants. He told police that they weren’t allowed in the home. Police then spoke with his daughter and granddaughter, who both also live at the house. They acknowledged the home was in bad shape but said all other living conditions are fine. The homeowner acknowledged that the broken windows pose a threat of danger. Erie County Children Services was also notified of the incident.

On March 30 at 8:26PM, police arrived at Nickel Plate Beach for a juvenile complaint. Police spoke to a man who said that he saw multiple people walking on the roof of the Carmeuse Lime and Stone plant and then saw three people, who appeared to be juveniles, walking out of the woods coming from the plant. Police then spoke to three, who were identified as juveniles. They said that they were only walking around in the woods area behind the Lake Erie sign and then decided to go sit on the beach. They denied going onto the lime plant property. There were no signs that they had trespassed.

On March 31 at 9:00AM, police arrived at a Wheeler Drive house for a golf cart inspection. After a $25 fee was paid, police inspected the vehicle. After meeting all of the requirements, the owner was issued a copy of the form and an inspection sticker was placed on the vehicle.

On March 31 at 12:00PM, during a patrol car inspection, it was noticed that a radar was not functioning properly. The issue was noted on the report.

On March 31 at 12:22PM, police arrived at a Berlin Road apartment for a domestic violence complaint. Police spoke with a man, who said he saw his girlfriend with his phone. He said that when he confronted her, she struck him three times with his phone. He said that he then, in self-defense, struck back at her. The man didn’t appear to be injured. Police then spoke with the girlfriend. She said that she was looking at the phone because of recent concerns about their relationship. She said then when he noticed, he tackled her to the floor and threw a fan at her. She then went down the hallway and was pinned up against the door frame by her boyfriend before he exited the apartment. She also didn’t appear to be injured. Both of them didn’t want to pursue charges. The man then gathered his stuff and left the apartment.

On March 31 at 2:44PM, police arrived at Bucyrus Avenue. Police spoke with a woman who said that she was traveling southbound on Bucyrus Avenue toward Cleveland Road West when a vehicle backed out of the listed address and struck the side of her car. Police observed moderate damage on her car, including paint transfer and the inability to open the rear driver side door. Police then spoke with a man. He admitted to backing out of the driveway and striking the woman’s vehicle. Police observed minor damage to the rear passenger side of his bumper. The two then exchanged insurance information.

On April 1 at 4:36AM, police arrived at the Berlin Road Mobil for a found dog. A man said, the while he was opening up the store, he observed the dog walking around with no collar. He said that he then brought the dog inside and called police. The dog warden then picked up the dog. A woman later called police and said she was the dog’s owner. She was advised to contact the dog warden.

On April 1 at 8:43AM, police arrived at a Cleveland Road apartment for a harassment complaint. A woman said that another woman has been making lewd gestures and remarks to her while she drops of her kid at school. She said that that day, she flipped her off. Police told her that nothing she described was illegal. They said that she could record the actions or just ignore them. Police then contacted the other woman. She said that the other woman flipped her off. She also said that she has moved out of her contact because of the situation between the two. She said she would like to press charges; however, police said that nothing illegal was described and told her what was told to the other woman.

On April 1 at 2:00PM, police arrived at a Cleveland Road house for a 911 hang up call. A woman said that she didn’t mean to call 911, and she has been having issues with her phone.

On April 1 at 2:03PM, a man and his daughter arrived at the station to report being scammed. He said he got a call telling him that he won money in a contest. He said that they told him that they told him they needed money sent to them before he would receive his winnings. The man ended up paying $3,000 to the people on the phone; however, he didn’t receive anything. He said that he realized it was a scam when he began getting numerous phone calls from several different numbers. He said to this point nobody has threatened him, and he has stopped answering the phone when it is numbers he doesn’t recognize.

On April 1 at 2:17PM, police observed a grey sedan traveling eastbound toward the active school zone on Cleveland Road West that appeared to be going faster than the posted speed limit of 20 MPH. A radar gun later found that he was going 39, 40, and 40 MPH. When police pulled the car over, the driver said he was driving at that speed because he thought the schools were out on spring break. He also said that he had a suspended license. The man was charged with speed (MM) and driving under a child support suspension (M).

On April 2 at 10:41AM, police responded to Goodwill for a report of a theft in progress. When police arrived, they waited outside as the people had not yet reached the checkout areas. Police called the assistant manager. She gave a description of the people and verified when the first person exited the store. She said that one of the men layered shirts in a dressing room and also stuffed a belt up a sleeve. Police spoke to the man when he exited the store. He was cooperative; however, communication was very limited, as it was only able to be done through Google Translate. He denied taking any items from the store and allowed officers to check his book bag, store bag, and person. The only items located were ones he paid for. The second man was then spoken to. Communication was also limited with him. Like the first man, the only items located were ones he paid for.

On April 2 at 5:05PM, a person turned in a set of threes keys to the fire department. The man said he found them at Valley Ford. Due to the keys being turned in after Valley Ford’s business hours, police said they would drop the keys off their on the following day.

On April 3 at 2:32AM, the Ohio State Highway Patrol said they had a man in custody who has two warrants issued from the Huron Municipal Court. The first was a contempt warrant with $1,090.00 cash only bond, and the second was a contempt warrant with no bond. The man was transported to the Erie County Jail.

On April 3 at 2:55AM, while on patrol, police observed two people wearing hooded sweatshirts standing on the west side of St Peter’s Church. The two suspects then began running eastbound in
between the church and gymnasium. Police then turned their overhead lights. Once the lights were turned on, they stopped running and police spoke with them. The two were identified as a 13-year-old and a 14-year-old. They said they were unaware of the 11PM-5AM curfew for juveniles 15-years-old and under. They said that they started running because the officer scared them. They were also holding a bag from Mickey Mart. They said that this is the reason why they were out. Police recommended that the two tell their parents about how late they were out. Curfew warning letters were later sent to the parents.

On April 3 at 5:46AM, police arrived at a Brookview Drive house to assist the squad with a subject with low blood sugar. Dispatch advised the person was being combative. Police assisted the squad until they were no longer needed.

On April 3 at 9:23AM, the manager of the Berlin Road Hy-Miler/Mobil station turned over a Discover credit card. People contacted the owner of the card, and the owner later came and picked up the card.

On April 3 at 4:34PM, police arrived at a Center Street house for a report of an alarm. Police spoke to the homeowner’s sister who typed in the wrong pin for the alarm. The woman said that she is watching the house for her brother, while he’s out of town.

On April 3 at 8:44PM, at the request of the Erie County Sheriff, police arrived at State Route 2 and Berlin Road for a report of a road rage incident that escalated into people arguing . Police separated the two people and waited until Sheriff deputies arrived.

On April 3 at 8:56PM, while arriving at a Salem Drive house for a report of a break-in, police were flagged down by a driver of a silver vehicle. The driver said that he was pretty sure officers were responding to a house. He said they were at the wrong house. A girl in the car said that they were currently participating in hiding of eggs for the girls soccer team. She that as she opened the house’s door, as she was instructed to do, she realized they weren’t at the correct address. They then left the house. Police then spoke to the homeowner via phone. She said that nothing was taken, and that she didn’t want to press charges.

On April 3 at 9:17PM, police arrived at a Firewood Road house for a report of a burglary. Police spoke to the homeowner, who said that when he left the house was closed. When he returned home, he noticed that his front door was ajar, the patio lights were on, the freezer door was open, and some items had been removed from shelving. No property was missing. The man also said that his neighbor suffers from dementia and has been known to roam about the area. He said that he thought that his neighbor may of confused homes.
