Woman dies after being hit by car; driver charged

CASTALIA – Two months after a collision that led to the death of a 65-year-old woman, the driver has been charged.

According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the incident occurred on the afternoon of Tuesday, October 11 at the intersection of of Main Street and North Washington Street in Castalia. The Patrol says Mary Beltz was walking southbound in the crosswalk at the intersection, when a 2018 GMC Acadia failed to yield while turning left and struck her.

Beltz suffered serious injuries due to the crash and was flown from the scene to Saint Vincent Hospital in Toledo. On November 27, she passed away from her injuries at Stein Hospice.

The driver of the GMC SUV, Lindsay Troike, 38, of Vickery, was charged in Sandusky Municipal Court on December 18 with vehicular manslaughter, a second-degree misdemeanor, along with failing to yield to a pedestrian, a minor misdemeanor.
