Huron swears in K-9

HURON – The Huron Police Department reinstituted their K-9 Unit when K-9 Jax was sworn in at Tuesday evening’s Huron City Council meeting.

K-9 Jax’s handler will be Officer Ryan Boesch, and he will live with Officer Boesch and his family when he is off duty.

The swearing-in follows a year-long effort by the Huron Police Department and members of the community to reinstitute a K-9 unit.

The initial cost to reinstate the unit was $30,000, with most of the money coming from community donations. In January, City Council put $5,000 from the general fund into the fundraiser for the K-9 unit.

The City will pay Officer Boesch an additional half-hour of regular pay per day to compensate him for his obligations in caring for Jax. The City will also pay for pay for all expenses and costs related to Jax, including food and veterinary care. They estimate this will cost $7,000 annually.
