Issue 1 voted down

Ohio voters have rejected a constitutional amendment that would have made it harder for future amendments to pass.

Issue 1 would have increased the threshold to change the state constitution from just over 50 percent of the vote to 60 percent and required five percent of the eligible voters of each county to sign a petition establishing any initiative to change the constitution.

Unofficial results report that 56.96% of voters voted against the amendment. 3,044,763 voters across Ohio turned out in either early voting or during the special August election day to vote. In Erie County, 21,343 voters turned out and 56.91% of them voted against Issue 1.

The amendment was proposed mainly to prevent a proposed abortion-rights initiative from passing this November.
