13-year-old missing for over a month found in California

BELLEVUE – 13-year-old Dominic Oakes, who was missing for over a month, was located Wednesday over 2,000 miles away from Bellevue in Thousand Palms, California.

Oakes was reported missing on Tuesday, April 4, after he did not return home from school.

According to a press release from the Bellevue Police Department, an investigation was launched in conjunction with the U.S. Marshals Service Missing Child Unit and the Huron County Sheriff’s Office. During the investigation, according to police, authorities learned Oakes was in Central California with his biological mother, Tanya Garcia, 41.

Police say Garcia was charged with interference with custody on Tuesday and the warrant for the felony charge was executed on Wednesday evening. Garcia and Oakes were both taken into custody, as a result.

Arrangements are currently being made to extradite Garcia to Ohio. Plans are also being made, according to police, to return Oakes to his legal guardian.
