Ruins of former Kelleys Island winery up for sale

KELLEYS ISLAND – The ruins of the former Kelleys Island Wine Company and the four acres of land surrounding it have been placed up for sale for $575,000.

The former building was built out of locally quarried masonry for the newly-formed wine company in the mid-1800s. Into the twentieth century, the company remained successful, even during prohibition, when they focused on producing grape juice. In 1933, however, a fire would engulf the building, leaving it in ruins and closing the Kelleys Island Wine Company.

In the nine decades since the fire, the ruins have remained standing, though the land surrounding it has become forested. Records from the Erie County Auditor’s Office show the property has been sold multiple times between a few people since the 1990s. In August 2022, it was sold to Beaks Development, LLC of Sandusky.

The property is now up for sale. The listing states the property still has a basement and cellar and says it “would be an ideal location for someone looking to redevelop and add to the hospitality buildings in the area.”
