Pennsylvania woman killed, four others hospitalized after being hit by semi on Turnpike

MILAN – A Pennsylvania woman was killed and four others, including three young children, were hospitalized Friday night after a semi-truck hit them on the Ohio Turnpike.

According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the incident started when Gilbert Jorden Jr., 30, of Corry, Pennsylvania, was driving a 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee westbound near milepost 116.5 in Oxford Township. Also inside the vehicle were Effie Carder, 26, a 4-year-old female, a 3-year-old male, and a 2-year-old female, all of Corry, Pennsylvania.

According to troopers, the Jeep drove off the right side of the road, struck the guardrail, and became disabled in the center lane. All five individuals exited the vehicle in an attempt to get off the roadway. However, a 2023 Freightliner Semi driving westbound by Akeeva Stinson, 27, of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, struck the Jeep and the five pedestrians.

Carder sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash and was pronounced deceased at the scene. Jorden and the three female juveniles sustained serious injuries and were transported by LifeCare EMS to Firelands Regional Medical Center.

Stinson was not injured.

The westbound traffic on the Turnpike was closed for approximately three hours following the crash.

The crash remains under investigation.
