FBI arrests man for Bettsville bank robbery, four others

FINDLAY – A Findlay man has been arrested by the FBI Northwest Ohio Safe Streets Task Force, the Findlay Police Department, and the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office for five bank robberies.

28-year-old Gage Daniel Shafer Haws, of Findlay, was arrested without incident by the Findlay Police Department SWAT team at a Findlay residence on Friday.

Haws is accused of the following bank robberies:

  • Premier Bank in Arlington on December 31, 2022
  • Old Fort Bank in Bettsville on February 2, 2023
  • Attempt at First National Bank of Sycamore in McCutchenville on February 10, 2023
  • Union Bank Co. in Kalida on February 11, 2023
  • State Bank and Trust Company in Delta on February 16, 2023

The arrest follows a lengthy joint investigation involving multiple agencies, including the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office, Findlay Police Department, Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, Kalida Police Department, Seneca County Sheriff’s Office, Delta Police Department, Fulton County Sheriff’s Office, Wyandot County Sheriff’s Office, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

“Ensuring the public is safe and free from perpetrators who seek to keep the community and businesses on edge through their criminal actions are one of the FBI’s highest priorities,” said Cleveland FBI Special Agent in Charge Gregory Nelsen. “The strength of our partnerships among federal, state, and local agencies is reflected in their swift action and careful work to identify and capture the subject.”

Haws is currently in custody pending a detention hearing on Friday.
