Perkins Board of Education hires new treasurer, accepts superintendent’s retirement

SANDUSKY – During Wednesday’s Perkins Board of Education, the Board voted to hire a new treasurer and accept their superintendent’s retirement notice.

The Board voted 4-0 to hire Mike Spafford as assistant treasurer. His first day with the District will be Monday, February 13. He will work with Interim Treasurer Betty Schwiefert through the end of the school year when he is expected will take over as treasurer. By that time, he is expected to have his school treasurer’s license after completing licensure training.

“We had some great candidates,” said Board President Eric Lapata. “And then we had a guy come through the door that just blew us away.”

Spafford is currently a senior advisor for Sudsina & Associates LLC, a municipal advisory firm. He previously served as the assistant to the city manager, interim city manager, and interim finance director for the City of Huron. Spafford graduated from the University of Dayton with a master’s degree in public administration and from the Ohio State University with a bachelor’s degree in political science.

He will replace Dan Bowman, who retired as treasurer in September.

The Board also voted 4-0 to accept the retirement notice of Superintendent Todd Boggs. Boggs plans to retire on July 31, 2023. He served as superintendent since August 2018.

“We have the talent to keep moving forward,” Mr. Boggs said. “For me, it’s the right time.”

Also at the meeting, the Board voted to hire Sam Wentz as the head volleyball coach for Perkins High School. Wentz takes over for Heath Hamilton, who resigned in December.
