Two local schools awarded thousands in grant money for safety

CASTALIA and SANDUSKY – North Point Educational Service Center and Townsend Community School are two of over 900 schools across the state of Ohio that will be receiving grant money for safety and security upgrades as part of the fourth round of Ohio’s K-12 School Safety Grant Program.

Townsend Community School in Castalia will receive $82,525.

Superintendent and Principal Ryan Bohn told Huron Insider, “We plan on using this grant money to install a new camera surveillance system in our school building. Our current cameras are outdated, and several of them do not operate correctly. We are very pleased to have been selected to receive this safety grant. It will help us in our mission to provide a safe school environment for all students and staff.”

According to their website, “Townsend Community School is a dropout prevention and credit recovery high school designed to support students and their families during their journey through high school. All students in grades 9-12, up through the age of 21, are eligible to enroll at TCS whether they are credit deficient, or they simply prefer a non-traditional option.”

North Point Educational Service Center in Sandusky will receive $88,000. Superintendent Doug Cooks did not respond to Huron Insider’s request for comment.

The Ohio General Assembly has allocated $112 million for the fourth and fifth rounds of the K-12 School Safety Grant Program. So far, the program has awarded $173 million to 2,374 schools.

“When we created the K-12 School Safety Grant Program, we expected that the need for funding would far exceed the amount of money available, but I vowed to go back to the legislature and ask for more,” said Governor DeWine. “Now, with the generous support of the Ohio General Assembly, I’m proud to announce that every single qualifying school that applied for a grant will receive funding.”

During the last round of funding, Huron City Schools and Vermilion Local Schools were awarded $100,000 per building in grant funding.
