Helen Steele

Helen L. (Brown) Steele, age 95, residing in Sandusky, passed away Wednesday afternoon, October 5, 2022 at Stein Hospice Care Center following a brief illness.

Helen was born on December 6, 1926 in Birmingham, MI to the late Oscar D. and Edna R. (Painter) Brown.

She was a 1945 graduate of Scipio-Republic High School in Republic, OH. She lived in the Republic, OH area as a farm girl before moving to Sandusky, OH in 1948. Helen had worked at the former New Departure, as an inspector from 1948 to 1954. She retired in 1985 from Fireland’s Hospital, formerly Good Samaritan Hospital, as a dietary aide, after 15 years of service. She worked as a volunteer at the Erie County Senior Center for 18 years, where she called bingo numbers and kept score for the dart ball team. Helen was a member of the United Auto Workers Local 913 and Mount Carmel Methodist Church in Clyde.

Helen used to spend winters camping in Florida and Texas. She had traveled all over the world, including Australia, New Zealand, Alaska, and two times to Europe, visiting Paris and France. She also went on a Caribbean cruise. Helen traveled in almost every state in the USA.

Helen is survived by her son, Alvin Christenson; daughter, Darlene Cote; step-daughter, Marqueta (Steve) Reedy-Engle; grandchildren; great-grandchildren and best friend, Orville Arnold.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Ralph H. Steele on August 12, 1991; longtime companion, James Lang and brother, Robert A. Brown.

Friends may call on Friday, October 14, 2022 from 10:00 am until time of funeral services at 11:00 am Groff Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1607 E. Perkins Ave., Sandusky. Helen’s son-in-law, Steve Engle will officiate. Burial will follow in Meadow Green Memorial Park, Huron.
