Huron Board of Education to vote on settling Title IX lawsuits

HURON – At their Tuesday meeting, the Huron Board of Education is scheduled to vote on two Title IX lawsuits that were filed in federal court over a year ago.

Both lawsuits were filed against Huron City Schools and several district employees by families of former female Huron City Schools students. They claim that their daughters were sexually harassed or, in one of the cases, assaulted by a male student at McCormick Junior High School in 2019.

The complaints state the district employees, including then-Huron Police Detective and Junior High Wrestling Coach Matt Jacobs, failed to properly investigate the claims, separate the female students from their harasser, and stop the harassment; which, as a result, caused the girls to suffer from mental and emotional distress and to leave Huron City Schools.

On Monday morning, Huron Insider made a public records request to the district for the proposed settlement agreements. Later that morning, the district said that they were not in possession of the record. Huron Insider will follow-up on this story following the meeting and when we obtain the settlement agreements.
