Richard Romell

Richard “Dick” Smith Romell, 87, passed away Friday evening at home following a courageous battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his loving family and passed peacefully knowing he was loved and going to a better place.

Dick was born May 25, 1935 in Milan, Ohio to the late Edward and Madeline (nee Smith) Romell.

Dick attended school in Milan and received his GED and technical TV repair certificate. He worked for Clevite Harris in Milan, Huron Public Schools, and Dick Camp TV. He was also a business owner of Dick Romell TV and Norwalk Dairy Dee. After 21 years of service as Maintenance Supervisor, Dick retired from Firelands College (BGSU) in 1993.

Dick was a member of Huron Saint Peter’s Catholic Church and previously attended Milan St. Anthony Church. He served on the Board of the Hidden Valley Condo Association and St. Anthony. He was also a eucharistic minister. He enjoyed gardening, reading, puzzling, fishing, and was a fix-it man for whoever was in need. He was a devoted family man who loved and enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Marianne (nee Wechter) Romell whom he married on September 14, 1957; three sons, Marty (Rene’) of Texas, Rich (Toni) of Westlake and Eric of Huron; as well as two daughters, Cathy (Harold) Davis of Texas and Sandy Leber of Huron; two brothers, Harold (Kathy) Romell and Tom (Patty) Romell; brother-in-law Dick Boehler; sister-in-law Lou (nee Jenkins); ten grandchildren, Kyle (Nicole) Romell, Amanda (Nate) Thomson, Stephanie (Matt) Butler, Elizabeth Davis, Sarah (Jonathan) Hoyt , Andrew (Andrea) Leber, Emily (Ian) Mikkelsen , Hannah (Ben) Carroll , Masen Romell, Kade Romell; four step-grandchildren, Danny (Michelle) Hyland, Michael (Alicia) Hyland, Vincent (Emily) Hyland and Terry Hyland; eight great-grandchildren, Dominic, Aria, Ciera, Avery, Zoey, Clara, Benjamin and Seth with two more on the way; five step great-grandchildren, Colin, Avery, Vinny, Sal and Emmy; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

In addition to his parents, Dick was preceded in death by three sisters, Catherine (Howard) Weilnau, Madeline (Dick) Gwirtz and Evelyn Boehler, and four brothers, John (Bobbie) Romell, Jim Romell, Don Romell and Bob Romell.

The family would like to thank the Cleveland Clinic – Cancer Center in Sandusky (Dr. Murphy & Dr. Engler); Executive Urology (Dr. Waters); Stein Hospice and all the wonderful staff who took such great care of Dick.

Memorial service will take place in Milan Cemetery for family only. The Groff Funeral Homes and Crematory, 1607 East Perkins Ave, Sandusky, Ohio is assisting the family with the arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Dick’s memory may be made to either Stein Hospice, Cancer Services of Sandusky or Huron St Peter’s Catholic Church.
