Huron Tiger boys track team wins SBC title

CLYDE – The Huron Tiger boys track team won the SBC Bay Division title at the SBC Championships for the first time in 17 years on Friday.

The boys finished with 185 points. The Oak Harbor Rockets were second with 167 points.

The first running event of the meet was the 4×800 Meter Relay. In it, the Huron team, which consists of Luke Steuk, Tyler Kohlmann, Elijah Routh, and Jacob Eck finished first with a time of 8:20.80.

In the 110 meter hurdles, senior Evan Brown finished first, while sophomore Beau Harkelroad finished third. The two had respective times of 15.82 and 15.92.

The Tigers’ 4×100 meter relay team broke the school’s previous record of 43.43. The team consisting of Beau Harkelroad, Andrew Delaney, Cooper Norwell, and Conner Schaeffer finished second with a time of 43.35.

In the 1600 meter run, senior Elijah Routh finished first with a time of 4:38.34, and junior Tyler Kohlmann finished third with a time of 4:41.57. Routh also finished first in the 3200 meter run (pictured in header) with a time of 10:17.21. Also in the 3200, senior Pearson Keller finished in third with a time of 10:33.73.

The last and most exciting boys running event was the 4×400 meter relay. For the first three laps, which were ran by Jacob Eck, Jackson Campbell, and Luke Steuk, the Tigers remained in a close second to the Rockets. However, junior Conner Schaeffer was able to take the lead during the last lap and win the relay for Huron. The final time of Huron’s 4×400 was 3:25.23, while Oak Harbor finished with a time of 3:27.67.

On the field event side for the boys, Huron’s Sean Kaminski finished first in high jump with a score of 6’4″. Brad Holbrook finished in second with a score of 6′.

The Huron girls team finished in third overall with 119 points. The Margaretta Polar Bears finished first with 157 points, and the Edison Chargers finished second with 142 points.

In long jump, junior Jaden Carey finished first with a score of 17’0.5″, and junior Kyla Garbe finished second with a score of 15’11”. Carey also finished first in the high jump with a score of 5′.

On the running side for the girls, the girls started off with finishing first in the 4×800 meter relay. The team consisting of Jadyn Towns, Lucy Watson, Samantha Lesnak, and Kennedy Schlessman had a time of 9:56.09.

The 4×200 meter relay team, which consists of Eliana Cozzie, Kyla Garbe, Maggie Golling, and Isabella Cozzie, finished first with a time of 1:46.73.

At the end of the meet, junior Kennedy Schlessman was named the Outstanding Performer for girls track events in the Bay Division. Along with being in the winning 4×800 team, Schlessman also finished first in the 800 and 1600 meter runs. She finished the 800 with a time of 2:20.20 and the 1600 with a time of 5:18.84.

The Tigers will now compete at districts on Thursday and Saturday in Ontario.
