Erie County Health Department issues “urgent reminder” about respiratory illnesses

SANDUSKY – The Erie County Health Department has issued an “urgent reminder” about community-wide transmission of respiratory illnesses occurring at an “alarming” rate.

In a press release, Erie County Health Commissioner Peter Schade wrote, “As we head into the winter season, crowded indoor activities like sporting events, shopping, entertainment, etc. pose a greater threat for respiratory diseases to spread. It is important to take every measure possible to prevent outbreaks of these diseases.”

The health department says both COVID-19 and influenza are threats.

The health department recommends individuals do the following to avoid becoming ill or passing illness onto others:

  • If symptoms of cold or flu appear, get tested and stay away from others until test results come in.
  • Wash hands often with hot soapy water.
  • Sanitize all hard surfaces frequently (1 cap full of bleach per gallon of water).
  • Wear a mask indoors in crowded settings.
  • Get vaccinated for COVID-19 and influenza.

“In Erie County, we are approaching 300 deaths related to COVID-19. Please do not become one of these statistics.” Schade wrote, “We implore you to educate yourself on disease prevention. These viruses are killing people. Be cautious, be careful, and, if you are an event organizer, be aware of the steps that need to be taken to keep people as safe as possible.

Vaccine appointments may be scheduled at the Erie County Health Department by calling (567) 867-5174.
