Roger Hamer

Roger L. Hamer, 81, of Huron, passed away on Saturday, October 23, 2021.

Roger was born in Huron, OH to the late Ernest and Freda (Behm) Hamer. He attended Heidelberg College and graduated from Ohio Barber College. He served in the US Coast Guard. Roger was a barber on Old Main Street in Huron from 1962 to 1967. He worked at New Departure-Hyatt from 1967 until 1992, when he retired. For many years, Roger worked a second job at Branch Motor Freight in Sandusky.

While barbering in Huron, Roger met the love of his life at the nearby Firelands Community Bank- Janet E. Gasek. They were married April 4, 1964. Together Roger and Janet had two daughters, Julie (Bob Jones) and Lisa. He loved and was proud of his five grandchildren: Kate, Zach (Ellen), and Becca Jones, as well as Larry and Jamie Fritz. Roger and Janet have enjoyed a lifelong friendship with traveling partners Jerry and Bonnie Lowery. (Roger and Jerry are now together, and are once again waiting on their girls!)

In addition to the treasured time devoted to his family and five grandchildren, Roger enjoyed helping others, woodworking, tending trees, yardwork, restoration of his dad’s Minneapolis Moline tractor, and baking pies.

Roger was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Donald E. Hamer; and a special aunt and uncle, Ed and Donna Hamer.

Roger’s life will be celebrated with a small graveside service at Scott Cemetery, Huron, on Wednesday, October 27th, 2021 at 11:00AM.

The family wishes that any memorial donation be made to Stein Hospice, 1200 Sycamore Line, Sandusky, Ohio 44870, in Roger’s name. He was under the great care of Stein Hospice in his final days.

Foster Funeral Home & Crematory, Huron, is assisting the family.
