Police Blotter for the week of April 18

HURON – Below is a summary of Huron Police reports from between April 18, 2021 to April 24, 2021.

On April 18 at 12:46AM, police arrived at a Dayton Avenue house for a welfare check. The complaint said a juvenile had texted suicidal comments to some friends and is no longer answering the phone. When police arrived at the house, the juvenile immediately started crying. She admitted to sending the suicidal texts, because she felt like harming herself. Police spoke to her mom, who said that she’d take her daughter to Firelands Regional Medical Center, for a mental health evaluation.

On April 18 at 7:17AM, police arrived at Armstrongs Drive Thru for an alarm. The owner told the alarm company that no one should be there. When police arrived, they spoke to an employee, who said the owner texted him about the alarm. He said that he checked the building and found it to be secure.

On April 18 at 9:30AM, while police were at the Rye Beach Road Shell gas station, a woman told them that she had been having issues with her neighbors. She said that, multiple times, she observed them going through her mailbox. Police then went to the neighbors’ house and told them not to go through other people’s mail.

On April 18 at 12:30PM, police arrived at a Center Street house for a golf cart inspection. After a $25 fee was paid, police inspected the vehicle. After meeting all of the requirements, the owner was issued a copy of the form and an inspection sticker was placed on the vehicle.

On April 18 at 1:19PM, police observed a white van traveling eastbound on SR2 that was going 80MPH, that’s above the posted speed limit of 70MPH. Police then pulled the van over. A check of the driver’s license found that it was suspended on March 23. The driver for was charged with Driving Under Suspension. He also received a written warning for the speed violation.

On April 18 at 4:16PM, police arrived at Rye Beach Park for an illegal dumping complaint. Police spoke to the man who was accused of dumping. He said that he was only throwing leaves and sticks in the fire ring. Police then spoke to the president of the home owners association for Rye Beach Park. She said that there was no issue and that she’d speak with the complaint privately.

On April 18 at 7:05PM, police arrived at a Ridgeview Drive house for a welfare check. The complainant said that her son was visiting with her child’s father in Huron. Police then went to the house and spoke with the father. He said that he was unable to find a ride to Avon, where the complainant lives. He said that he was going to contact her to see if she could pick up their son. Police then called the complainant back. She said that she was not in a position to drive to Huron. Police then told the woman that she might want to contact her local law enforcement or a lawyer, if the father doesn’t return her son.

On April 19 at 5:36PM, police arrived at the Colonial Colony apartments for a welfare check. Police spoke to the woman whom the welfare was requested on. She was able to answer questions and appeared to be cognitive.

On April 19 at 5:41PM, police arrived at a Cleveland Road house for a standby request, from Children’s Services. The homeowners were cooperative with Children’s Services. After they were done, police left.

On April 19 at 7:53PM, police arrived at a Cleveland Road house for a theft complaint. A woman said that someone had stolen a waterproof cover off her A/C unit. The cover was valued at $50.

On April 20 at 4:32PM, police arrived at a Wheeler Driver house for a lockout. A man said that he and his wife went out for a walk, and upon returning, the garage door keypad would not function. Police were able to enter the house by a first-floor window. They then unlocked the fount door for the homeowner.

On April 20 at 11:02PM, police arrived at the Huron Post Office for a report of an alarm. The building was checked and found to be secure. At around the same time as the alarm was activated, most of the City experienced a power outage.

On April 21 at 12:23PM, police arrived at a Cleveland Road apartment for a domestic dispute. A woman said that her and her boyfriend had gotten to an argument about him moving out. The woman said that no violence occurred in the argument. The boyfriend also said the same thing.

On April 21 at 5:17PM police arrived at a for a report of an injured bird. Police found the bird. It was a blue pigeon appeared injured and disoriented, and was unable to fly. Police first contacted Back to the Wild. They said that they couldn’t take pigeons in, due to them being house pets. Police then went to a Taylor Avenue house. The complaint said that man who lives at that house owns pigeons. The man said that he doesn’t own that pigeon, but he would take care of it, until it’s owner is found. Through the National Pigeon Association, police were able to contact the owner. He said that he sold the pigeon to a man in Fremont. He said that due to cost, that the bird could to be kept by the man on Taylor Avenue. That man agreed to keep the pigeon.

On April 21 at 8:28PM, police arrived at a Laguna Drive house for a man who wanted to speak to an officer. A man said that his downloaded the Discord app and was communicating with a person who said he was 14-year-old male from Illinois. The man said that he would like police to talk to his son about the danger of communicating with people he really does not know. The man later brought his son to the police station, and police spoke to the son. Police also referred the man to the police investigator, if he wanted help reviewing the contents of his son’s phone and social media accounts.

On April 22 at 9:35AM, a man arrived at the police station to report that he lost some property. Through an interpreter, He said that he his passport, social security card, visa, and I-94 form approximately two weeks ago. He said that the documents were in a folder. He said that the folder was lost somewhere between Sandusky and Huron.

On April 22 at 9:41AM, police arrived at SR 2 westbound for a report of a vehicle driving erratically. Police found the vehicle when it was driving on top of the white lane marker, then swerve back into the lane. They then pulled the vehicle over. The driver said that he didn’t know he was driving erratically, but that his tire was low on gas. Police found that the driver’s license was expired and the vehicle’s insurance was expired. The vehicle’s windshield was also partially cracked. The man was charged with failure to reinstate (UM) and warned for having an unsafe vehicle. The vehicle was later taken from the scene by a licensed driver.

On April 22 at 3:20PM, a man arrived on station for a golf cart inspection. After a $25 fee was paid, police inspected the vehicle. After meeting all of the requirements, the owner was issued the white copy of the form and an inspection sticker was placed on the vehicle.

On April 23 at 1:32AM, Lorain Police reported that they had a man with a warrant issued through Huron Municipal Court in custody. The man was later transported to the Erie County Jail.

On April 23 at 3:00PM, Norwalk police report that a man with a warrant issued through Huron Municipal Court was at Norwalk Municipal Court. Huron Police then arrived at Norwalk Municipal Court and arrested the man. He was later transported to the Erie County Jail.

On April 23 at 3:10PM, police arrived at a Cleveland Road apartment for a theft complaint. A woman said that earlier that day a package was delivered to her apartment; however, where she went to get the package, it was gone. She said that inside the package was about baby and maternity clothes, totaling around $285. The woman said that she suspects someone in the complex stole the package. Police told the woman to speak to her neighbors if they saw anything suspicious.

On April 23 at 9:30PM, police arrived at Nickel Plate Beach for a suicidal suspect. The complainant reported that her boyfriend sent her a photo on Snapchat of him with a firearm in his lap stating he was going to kill himself. Police spoke to the man, who appeared upset. The man did have a firearm with him, which police later took possession of. After a conversation with police and squad, the man was transported to Firelands Regional Medical Center, to speak with a mental health professional.

On April 23 at 9:55PM, police arrived at a Center Street house for found property. A man said that while he was walking his dog, he found a wallet. An identification card was found in the wallet. Police called the number associated with the name on the card; however, the number is no longer in service. An outstanding warrant from Lancaster was also found to be associated with the name.

On April 23 at 10:33PM, police arrived at a Berlin Road house to assist the squad with a subject suffering with mental illness.

On April 23 at 10:46PM, police arrived at Wheeler Drive house to assist the fire department with an unresponsive person, due both squads being in use. A man said that he found his friend, who has been living with him for several months, lying on the bathroom floor unresponsive. Police found the man and began giving him chest compressions. Approximately two minutes later, squad arrived and took over. Police then interviewed the man who found him, found no signs of foul play at house, and left.
