Police Blotter for the week of April 4

HURON – Below is a summary of Huron Police reports from between April 4, 2021 to April 10, 2021.

On April 4 at 11:03AM, police arrived at a Shawnee Place house for a report of a structure fire. The back side of the attached garage had caught fire due to hot embers from a burn pit being placed in a trash can.

On April 4 at 3:00PM, police arrived at a Main Street house to assist the Huron Fire Department with an unconscious individual.

On April 5 at 7:00AM, police were approached by an employee of the Rye Beach Hy-Miler/Shell. He said that on April 4 at 5:30AM, a man walked into the store and went into the beer cooler. The man then walked out of the store with two Truly beverages, valued at $2.49 each. The employee was able to get the make, model, and license plate of the man’s vehicle. He also got a description of the man. With this information, police were able to identify the man. He was charged with Theft (M1).

On April 6 at 10:28AM, police arrived at a Berlin Road apartment for a welfare check. A man said his ex-girlfriend send him a concerning text message this morning. Police were able to call the woman, and she said that she sent the text to him to tell him to leave her alone.

On April 6 at 11:12AM, police arrived at a Riverside Drive house for a report of an Identity theft. A woman said that Bank of American contacted her about a credit card opened in her name. She said that her identity was fraudulently used to establish a new account. Police told her that she may want to contact the credit bureaus and look into a credit monitoring service.

On April 6 at 4:45PM, police arrived at McCormick Middle School for a report of a dog running. Police were able to find the dog near the basketball court. The dog had an Erie County dog tag. With this, police were able to contact the owner and return the dog.

On April 7 at 12:45PM, a man came into the police station to turn himself in on three outstanding warrants. The man signed and was given a copy of his Recognizance Bond.

On April 7 at 6:14PM, police arrived at a Munsee Place house for a report of a suspicious man going door to door. Police spoke to the man who said he worked for Window Nation. When if Window Nation had secured a soliciting permit from the City of Huron, he said they had not. The man then said they would stop going door and that they get a permit.

On April 7 at 7:17PM, police arrived at the Krebs Cove Apartments to assist the Erie County Sheriff’s in serving individual civil papers. Police spoke to a deputy who said that a man staying in the apartment was making suicidal threats. Police spoke to a woman who said there is a civil protection order between the man and her daughter. She then said that the man would get drunk and call her making suicidal statements. She also said that the man had not man had not made any of those comments that day. Police then left. Once police arrived back at the station, they were advised by dispatch that the man said he’d like to speak to an officer. The man said that he was not suicidal nor did he have any thoughts of harming himself. Police then advised him to contact the Erie County Sheriff’s Office to pick up his civil paperwork. The call was then terminated.

On April 8 at 12:45AM, police arrived at a Riverside Drive condo for a report of a for a possible attempted entry two days prior. Police spoke to a man who said that several strange things had been occurring lately; however, he was unable to elaborate on what the strange things were. The man then showed that the handle on his rear sliding door had been removed. The handle was insider on a table and appeared to be undamaged. A screw driver was observed to be right by the handle. Two screws that hold the handle together were found to be missing. The man appeared to be confused and possibly to be suffering from a mental deficiency. Police secured the siding door with a pipe and told the man that it didn’t appear that anyone tried to break into his condo.

On April 8 at 7:06AM, police arrived at a Cleveland Road house, that was vacant due to it being remodeled, for a report of a house fire. Police provided traffic direction until they were no longer needed.

On April 8 at 10:13AM, police arrived at a Cleveland Road house for a report of a theft. Police spoke to a woman who said that a package may not have been delivered to the correct address by the Post Office. The woman said she contacted the Post Office, who it was delivery on April 4. Police spoke to the post master, who said that the regular carrier was off that day, but that he checked with the backup carrier who said she remembered placing the package at her door. He also verified through GPS that the carrier was in the area at the time stated on the delivery record. The post master also said that the package could have been dropped off at the same number address on the road behind. Police tried to contact the person who lives at that house; however, they were unable to. Police suggest that the woman the post master and the selling company to make a claim on the missing parcel.

On April 8 at 6:40PM, police arrived at Civista Bank for a general alarm. Police found the bank to be closed and secured. A small power surge is believed to of caused the outage.

On April 8 at 11:46PM, while an officer was driving to start his shift, he observed a vehicle traveling eastbound on SR2 that appeared to make several abrupt lane corrections, including going in between the right and fog lanes. Police pulled the truck over. The driver said he only had one beer and that he was driving between lanes due to Taco Bell messing up his order; however, the man had a smell of alcohol, was slurring his speech, and had bloodshot eyes. Police then asked the man to get out of his vehicle, and they performed field sobriety tests on him. After the tests were over, the man then said he had “three tall boys”. Police then performed a BAC test on him. It came back with him having .080% BAC. The man was arrested and charged with OVI (M1), OVI Per Se (M1) and Fail to Drive in Continuous Lanes (MM). The 20-year-old passenger admitted to drinking before they went to Taco Bell. He was charged with Underage Consumption (M1).

On April 9 at 11:30AM, police arrived at Kiwanis Avenue for a report of a red truck that had been parked on the street for a long period of time. Police found the truck and issued a parking ticket.

On April 9 at 2:33PM, police arrived at an Adams Avenue house to assist the fire department in a house fire.

On April 9 at 5:20PM, police observed that the “Keep Right/Yield to Pedestrian in Crosswalk” traffic control sign for eastbound traffic on US6 at Berlin Road was bent over. The City of Huron Street Department was contacted about the damaged signpost.

On April 9 at 6:42PM, police arrived at the Shore Club West apartments for a harassment complaint. A man said that his ex-girlfriend was threatening him on Facebook. The man said that he deleted the messages on his phone and blocked her on Facebook prior to police arriving. He said that he would like police to tell the woman to stop contacting him. He also said he wanted a restraining order put in place against her. Police were unable to contact the woman.

On April 10 at 12:24AM, the Ohio State Highway Patrol request that police check the westbound lanes of SR2, for a vehicle was driving erratically, with a possibly intoxicated driver. When police arrived, they observed a dark colored truck coming around the curve just past the US6 overpass. The truck was driving halfway in and out of the middle and right lanes, along with the fog lane. Police pulled the truck over. The driver said he only had one drink; however, he spoke with a thick tongue and was slurring his speech. He also appeared to have bloodshot and glassy eyes. Police then asked the man to get out of his vehicle. They then performed field sobriety tests on him. After the test the man was placed under arrest and transported to the station. A BAC test came back with him having .151% BAC. The man was charged with OVI (M1), OVI Per Se (M1), Fail to Drive Right Half (MM), and Using Weapons While Intoxicated (M1), due to him having a gun, which he had a CCW for, in the truck. He was released to his girlfriend.

On April 10 at 11:26AM, police arrived at a Rye Beach Road house for a report of a found dog. A woman said she found the dog wondering about. She also said that she contacted several neighbors, and none of them could identify the dog nor its owner. The dog had had no collar nor license tag. Police took the dog, and at 1:45PM a woman arrived at the station to pick up the dog.

On April 10 at 1:12PM, police arrived at the Huron Boat Basin for a report of a vehicle lockout. Police successfully unlocked the vehicle.

On April 10 at 3:20PM, police arrived at an Adams Street house for a report of breaking and entering. A woman showed a backyard fence that that was closed overnight was found to be open when the incident happened, approximately three weeks ago. A down spout was also found to have been broken off, and she said it was found three feet away. An enclosed room that is attached to the detached garage was also broken into, with the screen door leading into it appearing to be pried open. Loose change that was in a jar amounting to less than a dollar was taken from the enclosure. No other items were missing; however, several items were out of place, as if they were gone through.
