Lime plant imploded

HURON – Hundreds of people gathered along the Huron River on Friday morning to watch the implosion of the Huron lime plant.

The plant, which opened in 1967, has sat mostly vacant after Carmeuse shuttered most operations in 2018. Since then, materials from the plant have been moved off the property.

At 10:00AM Friday, the longtime staple of Huron’s waterline came down. Part of the structure, however, remained standing following the implosion.

The land is owned by Norfolk Southern, which owns other nearby properties, including several railway tracks and Nickel Plate Beach.
