Man allegedly crashes car, lies that it was stolen

SANDUSKY – A 28-year-old man was charged Tuesday after he allegedly crashed his car in Milan and then lied to Sandusky police about it being stolen.

According to a report from the Sandusky Police Department, on Friday afternoon, Kurtis McCowan reported that his 2016 Black Nissan Rogue was stolen sometime during the night and the thief crashed it in Milan. He said he believed the car was stolen because he left the key fob inside of it, the report states.

According to the crash report from the Erie County Sheriff’s Office, the crash occurred at the intersection of State Route 113 and U.S. 250. Deputies reported that the car failed to stop at the stop sign and traveled through the intersection.

According to the police report, a lieutenant from the Erie County Sheriff’s Office told the Sandusky police officer that when deputies arrived at the crash scene, the occupant of the car had left the scene. The car had severe damage and was towed from the scene.

The lieutenant contacted Sandusky police a few hours later to report that during a conversation with McCowan regarding the crash, McCowan admitted to driving and crashing the car.

McCowan was then charged with making false alarms, a first-degree misdemeanor. He was also charged with leaving the scene of an accident, a first-degree misdemeanor, and failing to obey a traffic control device, a minor misdemeanor, for the crash.
