Woman accused of stealing books off of counter

SANDUSKY – A woman is accused of stealing nine books off the counter at Books-A-Million in the Sandusky Mall.

According to a report from the Perkins Township Police Department, a woman reported to police on Thursday that on October 15, she came into the store with eleven books for their buy back program and left them with staff. She claimed that when she returned to the store, they only bought back two books because staff said the other nine were missing. She claimed that staff told her they would review the security camera footage and contact her; however, they did not contact her, the report states.

According to the report, police spoke to the Books-A-Million store manager. She told police that she reviewed the video, which showed a female walk up to the counter, grab the bag with the books inside, and leave.

The manager claimed that she found Amber Matter, 38, responsible for stealing the books, the report states. When police asked her about why she believed that Matter was the female in the footage, according to the report, she said that she posted the footage in a group chat and a loss prevention officer from a nearby store identified the woman in the video as Matter. That loss prevention officer later spoke with police and stated she was sure Matter was the female in the video, the report states.

Matter was charged with theft, a first-degree misdemeanor.
