Huron Board of Education to vote on new dress code

HURON – The Huron Board of Education will vote at their Tuesday meeting to approve a new dress code.

At the beginning of the 2022-23 school year, a modified dress code was put into place as a result of changes in the board-approved handbooks.

Several parents raised concerns over the wording in the current dress code, including a part that states shorts and skirts “must be an appropriate length using mid-thigh as a reference point.” The proposed dress code changes the rule to state that shorts and skirts “must be of an appropriate length with an inseam at least equal to 3 inches in length.”

At the beginning of the meeting, before the board will vote on the new dress code, the public is scheduled to have a chance to speak in audience comments.

Also at the meeting, the Board will vote on hiring a new varsity wrestling coach and renovating the bathrooms at Huron High School.

John Wasily has been recommended to be the next varsity wrestling coach. He replaces Matt Jacobs, who was sued by two former females students’ families over. In 2021, the former Board voted to renew Jacobs’ contract, dispute the lawsuits that accused Jacobs of using his position as the Huron Police detective to protect a wrestler who sexually harassed female students. Those lawsuits were settled earlier this year for $250,000 and $325,000.

The Board of Education will also vote on advertising a renovation at the bathrooms at Huron High School to contracting companies. The project is expected to cost over $50,000.

The meeting will start at 6PM and will be held in the in the conference room at the Huron City Schools offices. The full agenda can be found below.

EDITOR’S NOTE: A previous version of this article stated that the Board was voting on renovating the Huron High School bathrooms. The Board is only voting on advertising the renovation.
