Youngstown Mayor Announces New Infrastructure Projects

Youngstown Mayor Jamael Tito Brown recently announced several new infrastructure projects aimed at revitalizing the city, improving public services, and fostering economic growth.

A key focus is the redevelopment of the Chill Can property on the East Side, a 21-acre site recently acquired by the city. Previously slated for a manufacturing and research campus that failed to materialize, the mayor sees this property as a major opportunity for economic development. Plans are underway to assess the site and prepare it for redevelopment, with the goal of creating jobs and benefiting the community.

Downtown Youngstown also continues to recover from recent challenges such as the Covid-19 pandemic, extensive road construction, and a natural gas explosion last year. Mayor Brown highlighted ongoing efforts to support existing businesses and attract new investments, citing recent expansions by companies like Steelite International and Trivium Aluminum Packaging.

Another centerpiece infrastructure initiative is the Mill Creek Interceptor Sewer Improvement Project. This critical wastewater management upgrade aims to enhance environmental outcomes, support future development, and improve the city’s aging sewer systems. Public meetings have been held to engage the community on project progress and upcoming construction phases.

The city is also planning to rehabilitate the South Avenue bridge, which has been rated structurally deficient. This project includes repairing abutments, replacing pavement connections, guardrails, sidewalks, and curbs, with construction expected to begin around mid-2026.

Additionally, Youngstown is investing in an innovation hub focusing on aerospace and defense. Supported by $26 million in state funding plus local, federal, and private investments, this hub is intended to position the city as a leader in advanced manufacturing technologies, attracting high-tech jobs and companies dedicated to additive manufacturing and rocket propulsion.

Mayor Brown emphasized the significance of these projects for Youngstown’s economic future, stating that they will create opportunities, improve quality of life, and foster a lasting legacy of growth and community revitalization. These efforts are supported by strategic use of federal rescue funds and partnerships with regional stakeholders.

Overall, the combined infrastructure projects demonstrate Mayor Brown’s commitment to rebuilding Youngstown’s industrial base, expanding public services, and creating sustainable economic development that benefits residents now and in the long term.
