Fort Wayne, Indiana — According to newly released court documents, one of two Indiana teenagers charged with murder in a killing earlier this month admitted to police that he allegedly stood there while the other teen fatally shot the victim.
Shortly before 2 a.m. on June 1, police responded to the 900 block of Colerick Street after a family member discovered the victim in her home’s entryway.
Alice Hall, aged 86, was pronounced dead at the scene. The coroner determined that she died of a gunshot wound, and her death was ruled a homicide.
Days later, Devon Stewart Jr. and William Britt, both 18 years old, were arrested.
Stewart claimed in an interview with police that he had no idea the shooting had occurred until police informed him, according to Allen Superior Court documents filed Monday.
However, Britt told investigators what he claimed happened that night.
Britt claimed he went with Stewart to the house on Colerick Street because someone allegedly owed him $60. Stewart allegedly continued to try to get the attention of whoever was inside while Britt hid in the driveway. He eventually overheard a woman ask who was present.
Britt claimed that he heard Stewart say, “I’m gonna smoke that b****.”
Stewart then allegedly pulled the trigger, killing Hall, according to Britt’s police statement in court documents.
Britt claimed he then drove away, with Stewart in the passenger seat.
Surveillance footage shows that the entire confrontation occurred in just a few minutes, around 10:30 p.m. on May 31.
Stewart eventually told police that the reason he was at the house in the first place was to retrieve an Xbox that had been taken without payment. He also claimed the person stole his vape, Air Force Ones, and $160, which was slightly higher than the amount Britt stated. Stewart claimed they ended up at the house on Colerick Street because Britt assumed it was where the alleged thief lived, not the woman who answered the door.
Both teenagers are charged with murder and are being held in the Allen County Jail.
