You want bet' Defiant radio DJ drunkenly attempted to drive across a crime scene outside his skating rink, police said

A popular local radio DJ in Virginia found himself in the middle of a crime scene investigation — while allegedly committing the crime himself.

Brandon Stokes, 43, is best known as “Shaggy” in Virginia Beach, where he hosts Z104’s morning show. Stokes also owns a skating rink in the area, which he allegedly attempted to access on Wednesday morning, according to local NBC affiliate WAVY. At the same time Stokes was driving through the area, police were investigating an officer-involved shooting, making the area inaccessible.

Stokes allegedly attempted to drive through anyway, and he was allegedly intoxicated when police attempted to stop him.

According to court documents obtained by WAVY, officers stopped Stokes in his car at around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday. They repeatedly informed the DJ that he could not drive through the area while an investigation was underway. Stokes allegedly became “belligerent” and spewed profanities at the officers in response, saying, “You wanna bet?” when told he could not drive through the crime scene.

According to an officer who spoke with Stokes, his words were “slurred, incoherent, and shouting” and he smelled of alcohol. Stokes was asked if he had drunk that day, but it is unclear whether he responded.

According to the documents, Stokes later blew a blood alcohol concentration of 0.18 on a Breathalyzer test, which is more than twice the state’s legal limit of 0.08.

Stokes was arrested and charged with DUI and obstructing justice. According to WAVY, he was booked into county jail and later released on bond.

The New York Post reported that Stokes returned to the studio on Thursday to host his morning show.

Law&Crime contacted Z104’s parent company, Audacy, for comment, but did not receive an immediate response.
