Lorain, Ohio – A ceiling collapsed at the Oakwood Park apartments in Lorain on Sunday morning, causing minor injuries to two children.
Danyelle Wright says her 17-year-old daughter and 2-year-old son were sleeping in bed when the incident occurred.
Wright’s daughter was startled awake by a cracking sound and jumped on top of the 2-year-old.
Seconds later, Wright said the ceiling collapsed on top of her two children.
“My daughter said she heard the crash and jumped on top of him,” Wright told me. “The entire ceiling is missing. I’m not even exaggerating. “It is the entire thing.”
Wright described her daughter as a hero for her quick actions.
Wright claims she was at work when she received the terrifying call, which rendered her speechless.
“I couldn’t breathe, and I couldn’t even talk to EMS,” Wright said.
Fortunately, both children are fine and only sustained minor injuries.
“For the most part, my daughter is experiencing pain. “Because everything fell on her back and head from covering him,” Wright explained.
Wright claims there was originally a crack in her daughter’s bedroom ceiling caused by a tree falling on her apartment during a bad storm last fall.
“They fixed the outside roof, but not the inside of her room,” Wright told me.
She believes this is why the ceiling fell in on Sunday morning.
“They said that they looked in there, and there wasn’t anything wrong enough to fix the crack,” Wright told me.
19 News contacted ABC Management Company, which runs the apartment complex, for comment, but we have yet to hear back.
Wright claims she was given a new temporary apartment while maintenance repaired the ceiling.
“Everybody always wants their rent, but when it comes to the maintenance of the houses, what are we doing?” Wright asks.
The Lorain Fire Department reports that the building department is currently investigating this incident.
