A bride was killed after her wedding reception ended in gunfire.
The woman, her new husband, and their guests were wrapping up their wedding celebration in Goult, a village in southeastern France, in the early hours of Sunday, June 22, when armed men wearing masks opened fire, according to a source familiar with the investigation.
According to the source, the masked men opened fire as the bride and groom exited the reception around 4:30 a.m. local time, killing the bride and injuring three others.
A source told CBS News that one of the shooters was also killed. According to the outlet, he was run over by the couple’s vehicle while attempting to flee.
According to French newspaper Le Parisien, both the bride and one of the shooters died on the scene.
The groom was one of three people injured in the attack, along with a 13-year-old child who was in the newlyweds’ vehicle as they attempted to flee, according to Le Figaro.
According to the French newspaper, both the groom and the child were seriously injured.
The identities of the bride and groom have not yet been revealed, but the bride was 27 years old, according to Le Figaro. The newspaper also reported that, while the bride was unknown to police, the groom had a lengthy criminal record.
According to Le Figaro, the groom’s sister, who was the third person injured in the June 22 shooting, had a previous violent offense.
According to CBS News, officials have launched a major investigation into the shooting and are searching for the perpetrators.
Local officials believe the attack was premeditated and possibly gang-related, according to Le Figaro.
During a press briefing at the shooting site, Goult Mayor Didier Perello told reporters that he believes the shooting was “targeted,” according to the newspaper.
The prosecutor’s office in the nearby city of Avignon has opened an investigation for “murder and attempted murder by an organized gang,” according to Le Figaro.
