West Nile Virus found in South Dakota

SIOUX FALLS, South Dakota — The West Nile Virus has been detected in mosquito populations in three South Dakota counties (one of which is Brown County), but no human infections have been reported thus far.

Sioux Falls Public Health Director Joe Kippley says city crews discovered the virus in mosquito swarms.

West Nile has been detected in mosquito swarms in Brown, Minnehaha, and Lincoln counties.

The South Dakota Health Department rates the risk to humans as moderate.

You can protect yourself by limiting your exposure, especially at night, applying repellent, and minimizing skin exposure.
