FREMONT, Ohio – Trying to make Sandusky County a better place! About 15 volunteers participated in the United Way of Sandusky County’s Day of Caring. Some were new to volunteering, while others had been doing it for years.
“Thank you, thank you, thank you!” Ron Sesher exclaimed after volunteers removed weeds from his yard.
That’s how Sandusky County residents responded to the United Way of Sandusky County’s Day of Caring. Volunteers spent their Friday going around the community performing various acts of service.
One of them involved painting doors for a Habitat for Humanity home. Amanda Stines is the owner.
“I am on my own here. I’m a single mother with all of my children, and not having family or friends who can be here every day to help me build, and just knowing that everyone around here is extending their hand to me, it means a lot,” Stines explained.
Other volunteers spent their time at Share and Care, a non-profit that sells donated items and helps members of the community in need.
“A feeling of joy. Volunteer Josh Edds said that helping people and doing things makes him happy.
The Cooks, a husband and wife team, volunteer for the organization whenever possible.
“Togetherness. We even talk about it at breakfast, and it’s a fantastic place to volunteer and meet everyone who comes in. “I believe volunteering has brought us together,” said Jeanette Cook.
“I was telling her that we work together. We always work together, whether it’s in the kitchen, here, or on a painting project,” said Jeanette’s husband, Jay Cook.
Another project for the day is assisting seniors with yard work.
“It definitely made my day. I just did not expect it. We were having trouble finding someone and had put out feelers in a few different places. She called this morning, and I said, ‘Wow!’ “And they’ve done an excellent job,” Sesher stated.
Sesher, the homeowner, says he and his wife can’t keep up with the yard, so this is a huge help.
“I can’t do it any more. “My legs give out, and I can’t get on my knees, so that pretty much slows me down,” Sesher explained.
The volunteers hope to accomplish one thing.
“Makes all the difference in the world,” Sesher said.
