Vermilion, Ohio — Two people were rescued from a sailboat that ran aground on Lake Erie over the weekend.

According to the Vermilion Police Department, the marine patrol unit responded to a distress call just offshore from Sherod Park around 2:40 p.m. on Sunday, August 3.

Major construction project on I-90 begins Monday.
According to the department’s Facebook post, the sailboat was approximately 500 yards offshore in waves ranging from 2 to 3 feet high.

Two crew members were safely transferred to the patrol boat, and a tow boat was eventually able to unground the sailboat and transport it back to Vermilion for damage assessment.

“Boaters should be aware that this part of the Vermilion shoreline is notorious for such incidents. Vermillion police warned on Facebook that the depth of Lake Erie in this area is very shallow and increases slowly.

According to the post, 500 yards from the shoreline, the water is only about 4 feet deep. According to officials, there are several old submerged piers and large boulders scattered throughout the area.
