Troopers and coroner investigate man's death at westbound Route 2 rest station

BROWNHELM TWP –  State Highway Patrol troopers are investigating the death of a man on Tuesday at a rest area off State Route 2.

Highway Patrol Lt. Ray Santiago, commander of the Elyria post, said preliminary findings indicated that the man died by suicide.

Troopers were still working to identify the man on Tuesday evening, and Santiago did not know his age or address.

According to Santiago, troopers were dispatched to the westbound rest area shortly before 4 p.m. Tuesday on a report of a “unresponsive male.”

The man was discovered dead in an outdoor gazebo in a nature walk area north of the rest stop, which also features truck and car parking, a picnic area, and restrooms.

Santiago stated that the incident is still under investigation. There is no danger to the public, he stated.

The Lorain County Sheriff’s and Coroner’s Offices assisted Highway Patrol criminal investigators on the scene, Santiago said.

Dr. Frank Miller, county coroner, said he had no additional information on the deceased as of 6 p.m. Tuesday.
