A California inmate allegedly assaulted Graciela Bustamante, the woman charged with torturing and killing her 8-year-old stepdaughter, in jail. Following the assault, the public sent money to the inmate in support of her actions.
According to KBAK, Anita Doran, 36, allegedly attacked Bustamante, 27, inside the Lerdo Correctional Facility in Bakersfield, Calif., on August 8.
Bustamante was hospitalized following the alleged incident, but has since returned to jail, according to authorities, the outlet reported.
PEOPLE contacted the KCSO for comment on Saturday, Aug. 16, but did not receive an immediate response.
Bustamante and her husband, Ray Mata Jr., were charged with the murder of Mata’s young daughter, Genesis Ariah Mata, who was discovered dead in a hotel bathtub in Bakersfield on August 2, according to Fox 10, KBTX, and KBAK.
According to the outlets, the girl was allegedly burned with hot water, beaten, and whipped, with probable cause documents provided by local police.
According to the outlets, police claimed in the documents that the couple repeatedly slammed the girl’s fingers in a door frame, crushing her hand and causing her fingernails to separate from it.
Genesis was discovered with severe blisters and burns on her face and body, according to Fox 10.
“When you’re confronted with someone who is disgusting and has no remorse, you don’t want to deal with it because you don’t want to take it any further,” Doron told local news outlet KBAK following the alleged in-custody assault.
“I would definitely do this again,” she said.
Doron went on to tell the outlet that she and her fellow inmates were aware of Bustamante’s charges but tried to keep a safe distance.
“No one really wanted to deal with her,” Doron explained. “Some of the girls noticed her not taking [her case] too seriously. She had just returned from court, and she was laughing and giggling, and they were like, ‘Why, what’s funny?’ “
Doran stated in a video interview with ABC 23 after the incident that the charges against Bustamante were personal.
“I have a cousin, Genesis. “A little cousin — she’s ten,” the inmate explained.
Doran’s jail commissary account received a flood of donations after her name was made public following the alleged assault on Bustamante, according to KGET. Funds could no longer be accepted as of Friday, Aug. 15, because the account had “reached the maximum number of transactions allowed,” according to the outlet.
According to KGET, Doron is facing charges in connection with the recent alleged assault. Doran is currently in jail on charges of evading an officer and stealing a vehicle, according to public arrest records.
