A girl died on her first birthday after she and her 11-year-old sister were hit by an alleged drunk driver while crossing the street on their way to a park in New Hampshire.

Justin LaClair, 23, is charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated, reckless conduct, and conduct after an accident, which is the Granite State’s version of a hit-and-run offense, according to a press release from the Manchester Police Department.

Around 4 p.m. Thursday, cops responded to a reported collision near Lake Avenue and Belmont Street. Cops discovered the two girls, who were suffering from serious injuries, and paramedics rushed them to the hospital. Moments later, officers discovered a second crash involving the same car a few blocks away. LaClair was present and attempted to flee the scene before being arrested, according to police.

Rebecca Cole died on Saturday, her first birthday, in a Boston hospital, according to Manchester police. Her sister is still being treated in the hospital for her serious injuries.

According to court documents, the baby’s neck appears to be broken. Her sister reportedly broke her arm, femur, and clavicle, as well as having a lung punctured.

LaClair allegedly told cops that he had been drinking and that he did not remember hitting the child.

Surveillance footage of the crash reportedly showed the girls flying through the air after impact, after which LaClair allegedly accelerated away.

“He is going so fast that when he crosses one of the streets, the car actually goes airborne,” Hillsborough County assistant prosecutor Carl Olson reportedly said during LaClair’s arraignment. “That is the kind of speed he is going.”

Steven Cole spent Father’s Day mourning the loss of his daughter and the serious injuries sustained by his other daughter.

“I tried to save you,” he told Rebecca during a vigil, according to Manchester Ink Link.

“Why, why take away my little girl?” He also spoke through tears, according to the local news website. “All we wanted to do was go to the park and play.”

According to local ABC affiliate WMUR, LaClair’s attorney argued at a hearing that her client should be released on bond because he has no history of reckless driving or a violent past.

But the judge disagreed and ordered LeClair to remain in jail without bond.
