The ADA held a disability resource fair to commemorate

Rapid City, South Dakota –  Rapid City is commemorating the 35th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act with a resource fair to connect people with disabilities with the appropriate organizations.

In addition to the ADA anniversary, the Disability Awareness & Accessibility Committee is commemorating 50 years of service in Rapid City.

“Today is all about connecting people with disabilities, seniors, families, and caregivers with the resources they require to live their best lives. And this will look different for everyone. We have nearly 30 vendors present today, covering all aspects of one’s experience.” Committee Chairperson Tamie Hopp stated.

“One stop where you can learn about all kinds of disabilities, and what I’ve found is that people learn and grow by learning about disabilities other than the ones they came for. So we’ve also enjoyed making contacts with other organizations.” Ruth Conway, president of the Autism Society of the Black Hills, said.

Rapid City has been committed to making its community more accessible for the past 50 years, with upgrades to downtown, Dinosaur Park, and the Canyon Lake Little League becoming ADA accessible.

“For the past 50 years, we have worked to advance, support, and promote the equal inclusion of people with disabilities in our communities. And what’s remarkable is that it took 15 years before the Americans with Disabilities Act was passed.” Hopp said.

A little more than 28% of adults in the United States have visible or invisible disabilities.

“We just want people to know we’re out here and available. Sometimes, especially with new diagnoses, people are unaware that there is anyone else and feel alone. So we want people to know we’re here and reach out to us.” Conway said.

If you were unable to attend today’s resource fair, the Disability Awareness Committee is available all year to help people connect with the right organizations.
