Stormy Saturday Leads to Cooler Labor Day Weekend for Caribou, Maine

Caribou residents should prepare for a stormy Saturday as thunderstorms and heavy showers move through Aroostook County, bringing potential hazards for travelers on I-95. Slick conditions may persist through the afternoon, but the storms will taper off by tonight, leaving behind patchy fog. As the weekend progresses, a refreshing wave of cool air will sweep in, offering a taste of fall by Labor Day.

According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, showers and thunderstorms will subside late on Saturday, making way for drier conditions. By Monday, sunshine is expected to return, but cooler Canadian air will cause overnight temperatures to drop into the lower 50s, a notable shift after the humid conditions that preceded the cold front. Afternoon highs will be more comfortable, topping out in the mid-70s—a sharp contrast to the warmer, muggy air from earlier in the weekend.

Labor Day itself is expected to be bright and pleasant, with highs near 77°F. However, residents should be ready for cool evenings as the air becomes crisp and refreshing. This marks one of the first fall-like air masses of the season to move across northern New England, providing a welcome break from summer heat.

Sunday may still bring a few lingering showers, but conditions will improve significantly by Monday. Farmers and outdoor businesses can expect drier fields and cooler mornings, and campers or travelers are advised to pack layers to stay comfortable through chilly nights.

Looking ahead, NOAA’s extended outlook shows that much of the Midwest and Northeast will trend below average in early September, meaning the cool, fall-like pattern could last through next weekend for Maine.

The five-day forecast for Caribou includes:

  • Saturday: Showers and thunderstorms likely, high near 64°F, storms tapering late.
  • Sunday: Chance of showers, high 73°F, evening low near 48°F.
  • Labor Day Monday: Sunny, high 77°F, cool night with a low near 50°F.
  • Tuesday: Mostly sunny, high 78°F, low 53°F.
  • Wednesday: Slight chance of showers, high 73°F, low near 52°F.
